“Help! My relative is ill and I want to take care of them at home, but I don’t know what to do!”
This is the call for help I want to answer. I am a registered nurse with over 45 years of diverse nursing experience, including hospitals, clinics and various types of home care.
Not everyone has a nurse next door to call on in this situation. Capable people find themselves overwhelmed by “medical speak”, by the amount of new tasks thrust upon them and by the many nurses, caregivers and therapists that enter their homes. Unfamiliarity with taking care of another person with medical or nursing needs may intimidate otherwise skillful, competent people.
My goal is to provide information to fill this need. To explain the basics of providing a health promoting environment and details of healing care. So that those who are suddenly thrust into a nursing role will be empowered to both provide care to their relative and to have a basis for evaluating a home caregiver.
This site and blog is where you will find the “nuts and bolts” of how to take care of someone who, at least temporarily, cannot do for themselves. Whether they are undergoing physical rehab, recovering from illness or surgery, are on hospice or whatever their specific situation is, the basics of care giving apply to all.
